A year or so after, Hurricane Irene hit New Jersey. Although we did not incur any damage, I started to think “what if…” then I remembered a suggestion Jay had made about adding business interruption insurance. I remembered brushing it off thinking this is the NYC area; somehow I would be able to get to work. But soon after the storm, Jay was just touching base, and so that came up again. It was decided that we would look at that in the next renewal. Jay showed me that it would not cost much more than I was paying and it covered more than just storms. Well, October 2012 saw Superstorm Sandy hit the NYC tristate area. We lost power for 4 days in New Jersey. There were gas lines. No public transportation. My employees could not get to work. The tristate area was shut down in a state of emergency. If ever there was a situation that could interrupt my business, this was it.
Jay helped me with the claim. My small company was just as important to Jay as his many larger customers.
The claim was settled rather quickly, considering and I was able to recoup the loss of income from the shutdown.
